Second Workshop for Earth Science Satellite
Remote Sensing
October 15 - 22, 2002
George Mason University
Fairfax Campus
This second workshop is designed to give attendees
with limited remote sensing background a thorough introduction to current
and future NASA, NOAA and other Earth science remote sensing data retrieving,
processing, analysis and applications. This workshop is not only focused
on the retrieval, analysis and application of geophysical parameters
derived from remotely sensed data for the Earth system science research,
but also will cover how to search, order datasets from NASA EOS Data
Gateway (EDG) and Distributed Active Archive Centers (DAACs) and to
process, analyze these datasets for one’s own projects. It covers
Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS), Tropical Rainfall Measuring
Mission (TRMM), Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS), Atmospheric
Infrared Sounder (AIRS), and Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit (AMSU)
data. The National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite
System (NPOESS) and NPOESS Preparatory Project (NPP) will also be discussed
in the workshop. Emphasis will be placed on the recently launched Moderate
Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). Some key MODIS science
team members will be invited to give seminars. Guest speakers from NASA/Goddard
Space Flight Center (GSFC), EROS Data Center, and George Mason University
(GMU) will also cover the MODIS directly broadcast system, MODIS data
subsetting, subsampling, MODIS Reprojection Tool (MRT), Hierarchial
Data Format for Earth Observing System (HDF-EOS), HDF-EOS Data Format
Converter and other EOSDIS Tools, Geographic Information Systems (GIS),
Web-GIS, and Data Mining.
Personnel from NASA/GSFC, NOAA/NESDIS, EROS Data Center,
University of Maryland (UMD) and the Center for Earth Observing and
Space Research (CEOSR) at the School of Computational Sciences (SCS),
GMU, will participate in the teaching. Certificates will be awarded
for international, NASA/GSFC Remote Sensing Information Partner (RSIP),
VAccess-MAGIC, and USDA/Forest Service attendees.
